Picture 0 for St. Paul's Pipe Organ Receives Distinguished Citation

The Casavant pipe organ at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Port Hope, has just been designated as a Class A Heritage instrument by the Royal Canadian College of Organists. This classification puts this organ into a small elite group of pipe organs, with only 14 other Organs in Canada holding a Class A designation.

On November 19th, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. a Musical Recital will be held to mark this occasion, and to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the installation of this organ which was installed in November 1911.

This Casavant Opus 467 organ is a tubular pneumatic action organ styled after Romantic French organs and is one of only a few remaining in Canada is in its original condition and placement. It also has the original unaltered console, stops, pipes and bellows, even although it now has an electric blower it could be pumped manually if necessary during a power outage. This actually happened, at the wedding of one of the members of the congregation a number of years ago. No tonal changes have been made to this instrument which has 2 manuals, 19 ranks, and 1,057 pipes.  Some of the pipe work came from the former Baldwin Street, Presbyterian Church Organ, which was used as the original Organ at St. Paul's when it opened in 1906 and these pipes were incorporated into the present instrument at the time of installation. This makes that pipe work over 170 years old

This recital will celebrate the history of this instrument with the present and four former organists taking part in a musical celebration of this event. The performance will include a mix of both Organ and Choral works and will be accompanied by a variety of musicians as they perform works by Canadian as well as European Composers.

This once in a life time event is free of charge; however, a free will offering will be taken to support three local causes, Fare Share, Port Hope Benevolent Fund and St Paul's Accessibility project.

The evening will include some special elements, so come along and be part of history, bring a friend, and enjoy some fantastic music.
