Any area student who’s ever sat in church and contemplated the thunderous majesty of the pipe organ will have an opportunity to learn about the mighty instrument during an upcoming introduction on Saturday, April 14.
Students from age 10 through high school are welcome to the free hands-on discovery of the glorious pipe organ sponsored by the area chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) and the Florida Chautauqua. Piano and keyboard students are especially welcome to attend, and are invited to bring sheet music to play favorite selections on the organ.
“They watch a demonstration of the organ and an AGO member explains how the organ works, then they all get a chance to try it out themselves,” explained Leon Curenton, organist for the Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church and the First United Methodist Church in Crestview. “They’re encouraged to bring sheet music for favorite pieces they can try out on the organ.”
Students will learn their ranks from their manuals, and will discover where the phrase “pulling out all the stops” originated and how it pertains to the organ. They’ll see organ pipes, not all of which may be visible to the casual observer, that can range in size from as small as a person’s finger to a massive tube big enough for an adult to stand in.
Manual pipe organs remained the most complex device ever designed and assembled by humans until the invention of the telephone system. The world’s greatest composers created works just for the organ. During the free Pedals, Pipes and Pizza event, students will hear some of those tremendous pieces.
The event features the pipe organs at the DeFuniak Springs First United Methodist Church and St. Agatha’s Episcopal Church, both on Circle Drive. A pizza lunch will be served. Though the event is free, donations are welcome. For information and registration, call 892-2690. The event 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday.
The objective is to reach human immortality—that is, to create things which are necessary to mankind, necessary to the purpose of the existence of mankind, and which have become the fruit that drives the creation of a higher state of mankind than ever existed before."
