AN ANCIENT organ which has provided music for churchgoers for more than 100 years is set to be restored with the help of community donations.

St Nicholas' church has launched a special appeal to raise funds to repair its old pipe organ, which was built in 1870, as a part of its celebrations of Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee.

The Queen has sent a message of support to church's vicar the Rev Canon Richard Awre and his congregation, but the most important support needed is financial as it will cost £115,000 to complete the project.

Mervyn Kimberley, the chairman of the restoration team, said: "We are asking members of the church and the community to help us save our beautiful organ.

"We know this is a huge sum, but the repairs to our pipe organ will mean that the musical voice of the parish church will be saved for the next 50 years."

The church is delivering appeal flyers to 5,000 homes in its parish, which invites everyone to attend the launch of the appeal which will take place at a special Diamond Jubilee service, on Sunday at 10am and will be attended by the mayor Cllr George Illingworth and the mayoress Joanna Illingworth.

St Nicholas will also be giving thanks and remembering that Elizabeth I visited the historic church in 1575 when she stayed at the castle as the guest of Robert Dudley.

During the afternoon, tea and cakes will be available at the church to welcome anyone attending to support the appeal.

Anyone wishing to sponsor one of the 1,500 organ pipes may do so for £5 for one of the Piccolo pipes, which are only six inches in length.

The largest pipes, the Bourdon, are 16 feet long, and are £300 each, but there are 12 different sizes to choose from.

The Parochial Church Council has already donated £10,000 to start the fund and a donation of £25,000 has been given from a parishioner.

Donations can be made at the church or cheque to St Nicholas Kenilworth Organ Appeal, can be sent to Mervyn Kimberley, 6 Canterbury Close, Kenilworth, CV8 2PU.
