Hi!

The St Maximin Course is highly recommended. The theme this year is
Theme 2011 : the plainchant, source of inspiration
Hymns, Te Deum & O filii...The Hymns by Nivers to Grigny, Corrette...,
Te Deum by Marchand, Lasceux, Boëly...,
O filii by Dandrieu, Beauvarlet-Charpentier...

The instrument at St Maximin is highly interesting as playing it is really an experience of going back to source - the source from which so much organ heritage derives, and it enables us to move forward towards any other instruments which we might play with a different understanding. It remains significantly unaltered from before the French Revolution from 1775. Napolean's troops appreciated that it was too outstanding to be allowed to be destroyed when the then organist struck up the Marseillaise on the dozen ranks of trumpets . . .
Leading the course is Philippe Bardon. His uncle Pierre has been the Titulaire organist there for longer than anyone can remember and Philippe has grown up in the context of the original instrument surrounded by a wider research of the contemporary and preceding repertoire with which he is not only familiar but expert. He has a particular musicality to his understanding and appreciation of the emotion conveyed by the often deceiving appearance of the notes merely written upon the page. Comparing his comprehension of this musicality with his counterpart Organiste Titulaire at Albi . . . . suffice to say, there's no competition. . . . His musicality leads to an expression upon what is thought by many to be an inexpressive instrument which can lead to greater understanding of expression upon instruments that facilitate it better - and for this reason this course is particularly and highly recommended to all keyboard players.

Hi!

Students of this year's Academie d'Orgue enjoyed the privilege of a day's tutorial with Michel Chapuis
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1925259772265.2098283.1265258549
who first played the instrument at St Maximin in 1961

Also there was Pierre Bardon celebrating 50 years as Organist Titulaire and a genius of inspiration:

The concert of the students next Sunday should be good - they will have received the finest of inspirations and technique . . . 5pm. It's possible to attend a St Maximin concert even as a day trip from England with any flight arriving at Nice by 2pm and then a 70-90minute drive to St Maximin. After the concert you can be guaranteed to get back to the airport for an 8-8.30pm checkin.

For the 50th Anniversary concert last weekend, Philippe Bardon played among others a transcription of Handle's Fireworks music for 4 hands - a tight fit at St Max - with Marc Adamczewski and Mendelssohn's 3rd Sonata in a manner that was excitingly climatic - made the hairs tingle at the back of the neck and finished with a Grand Jeu incorporating Happy Birthday!

Utterly SUPREME!

Best wishes
