Title: Computer programme for soundboard and pallet layout
Post by: David Pinnegar on October 25, 2011, 07:29:01 PM
Hi!

Following correspondence with a French contact I stumbled upon
http://pascal.leray.free.fr/projet/cao_sommiers.html
which looks extremely useful . . .

It's been used on a very exciting experimental 5 manual instrument - http://pascal.leray.free.fr/projet/projet_don_orgue_en.html

Best wishes

Hello everybody,

I apologize immediately to quote other sources of forum, it being understood that, if a further exchange is possible in this place, it is obviously on this forum (and in English) that I will continue the conversation.

There a few years ago, I started thinking about it. It is also conceivable that I return on it, especially because I think  that my progress in programming have not stagnated. And I still believe it will be necessary to develop the facilities of organological publications since some organbuilders who restored such great Cavaillé-Coll are absolutely willing to publish their studies on the web.

As I said in French here (http://www.hydraule.org/eglise/forum/read.php?2,589) (translated here (http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=fr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hydraule.org%2Feglise%2Fforum%2Fread.php%3F2%2C589) by Google)

The website of Pascal Leray gives see sketches of windchests. However, it quickly becomes clear that there are, in fact, fully electric with one electromagnet by pipe. Well, I find it of course interesting... but I think that we have to progress .. and publish.

I tried to start the conversation on this topic on the Mander's forum (http://mander-organs-forum.invisionzone.com/index.php?/topic/2705-some-computing-software-inline-for-organbuilding/http://www.organmatters.com/index.php/topic,1035.0.html). It is one thing to find this very well, congratulate, encourage... Another thing is to criticize and make news ideas, even completely contradictory to what I try to grow. In short, it often falls into the water, the organbuilders considering they have other things to do than give their recipe calculation of windchests to the community who do not cares of this things.

Thence to imagine they please share their work under the aegis of Open Source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source) or Creative Commons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons) licenses... We can dream. Is this forum haunted by organbuilders? Are there (a little bit) programmers ? Am I alone in this world ?

Dear Sébastien

What a pleasure it is to welcome you into this forum as what you have in mind is exactly what this forum is here for. It is a free place, free of any commercial or vested interest and free for all in which to create.

I apologise sometimes for talking about religion in the belief section, but the understanding of the Creator as that which creates, and putting the rules of the process into creation into the way in which one works and interacts with people is a game-changer, a life-changer, perhaps even a life saver.

And the spirit of what you have in mind is spot on.

Thank you so much for joining the forum and contributing whatever you feel free and able to share so that ideas may develop. It might be a lonely place - it takes a lot of effort to help people to understand that they can share abundance without losing anything and gaining more from the whole - but eventually they will but it takes courage to lead.

So I wish on this New Year's Eve courage and support in all that you want to do and rewards this coming year and the years to come as a result.

Best wishes

Hello Sébastien,

I work on the principle of open source, I think we should share knowledge. We are working on a switching system at present, based on the Raspberry Pi, for which the software will be open source.

Anyway, thanks for posting, and I'd be keen to discuss further.

Dear Jonathan

Switching system based on Rasberry Pi! Great!

It is in fact rather important for the preservation of organs in the future for the mechanism to be open source as in the next generation no-one will be able to repair them.

For this reason please might I urge you to join EOCS which is actually a general interest Organ Constructors Society that encompasses the Electronics of pipe organs.

One veteran but active member in particular, Trevor Hawkins, is singularly responsible for the design, and maintenance, of numerous time multiplex remote console organ switching systems in organs all over the country today. He freely shares information within the society and the knowledge spawns and fertilises all sorts of wonderful ideas.

Coming together in this way will restore a critical mass of enthusiasm and creativeness for the organ to thrive and flourish into the next generation.

Best wishes
