I have just seen this on another forum. What an immense loss this is to the world of organ and church music. My thoughts are with his family.

From Mander Organs discussion board:-

Now it its third year, the Southbank Centre is offering an Organ Scholarship. The scholarship is designed as a professional development and leadership training scheme.

From September to July 2016 this unique training placement will support our International Organ Series concert programme, development work and organ participatory activity.

We are looking for a confident scholar to be an ambassador for the organ and to work closely with the Learning and Participation team to help engage new audiences including schools and the general public with this extraordinary instrument. This is a unique and extremely exciting opportunity for a music student or graduate, with specialist organ training, to gain experience from our Organ Curator William McVicker, to support and collaboration with our music programming team and to be a part of a lively cross-arts organisation.

The Organ Scholar role will will run on a bursary system, with an expectation that you will work 20 hours per month. You will be involved in a number of our annual festivals and you may be asked to participate in a number of performance opportunities and learning projects. Any additional project activity, over these 20 hours, will be paid at a fixed rate.

This is a supported traineeship role and opportunities to take part in additional training, role shadowing and work placements can be negotiated on a case by case basis.

Closing Date: 17th August 2015

Electronic Organs / New practice organ on its way!
July 22, 2015, 09:29:17 AM
Hi

Yesterday I ordered (thanks to selling a car!) a digital organ for my "music room".  I've gone for a Viscount Envoy 35, after having been offered a remarkable deal by my good friends at Promenade Music.  All I need to do now is make space for it (and try & cram too many instruments into the space!).  More later once I've got the organ, which uses "Physical modelling" technology rather than samples, and sounded very impressive when I had a demo recently.

Organ Music and Repertoire / Manuals only music
May 03, 2015, 09:35:12 AM
Hi

I've just had confirmation thaat I'm playing for a wedding in a couple of weeks.  The organ is a single manual (no pedal) 1960's Mander rebuild of an earlier instrument.

Can anyone point me in the direction of downloads (preferably free) of "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" & the Mendelssohn "Wedding March"?  I think I've only got arrangements for larger organs.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi

Very interesting EOCS meeting on Saturday.  One topic of particular interest to impecunious organists who want a home practice instrument was the development of an organ simulator using Grande Orgue running, believe it or not, on a Raspberry Pi mini computer.

The EOCS is well worth the subscription (which is very modest) for anyone looking to build an organ - or a computer simulator.  There's a lot of expertise, and designs available to mebers for most of the necessary hardware.

Hi

This came o my attention this morning.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-32070733

It rather raises the question of housing such collections long term.  Similar issues have arisen in Theatre organ circles - let alone churches getting rid of organs.

Hi

A recent post on Facebook turned out to be about an organ I once (late 1960's) knew well as one of the church's deputy organists.  The organ is 3 manual - but the console only has 2 keyboards, with Great & Choir sharing the lower manual.  I've come across this twice - in both cases, Great & Choir stops shared the lower manual of a 2 manual console. I gather that at Acton Baptist Church is came about because a previous organist was short-sighted and wanted the music desk kept close http://www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=N17467 has the details. I was one of the deputy organists there for a short while in the late '60's. The other was St Luke, Bristol Road, Birmingham - http://www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=D02812 Onetime a regular practice organ when I worked at the nearby technical college. I don;t know the reasons for the shared manuals there.

Are there any other examples of this unusual arrangement?  I seem to remember reading that the late Percy Vickery used something similar on his theatre-style home-built electronic.

Last night's "Late Junction" on BBC Radio 3 included a collaboration session including pipe organ (Westminster Cathedral (Roman Catholic) and "found sounds" - I guess some of it like musique concrete.  Interesting in its way.  (But not for traditionalists!)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/ljs is the link to the podcast.  The show itself is available via http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006tp52 and included some solo tracks by Martin Baker from the Cathedral (recorded for the show) and other Christmas music of several varieites, including some jazz organ.

Miscellaneous & Suggestions / Happy Easter

A very happy & blessed Easter to all members.

I'm finding it strange not having any church responsibilities this year!  (I've just had to retire).

Hi

Due to circumstances, I need to dispose of the remaining parts of my house organ project.  I have available FOC a 56 note manual (from a tracker action instrument), a reservoir & blower from the same instrument (3 stops).

I also have the 30 note straight, flat pedalboard from the same instrument.  That's been fitted with a MIDI encoder, but the "temporary" contacts I put on it need replacing or at least a major rework!)  Offers to cover the relatively small cost of the decoder.  All itmes will need to be collected from Bradford fairly soon (i.e. before I move).

Hi

News posted by Organists' Review last night of the death of organ builder William Drake - perhaps best known for his restorations of Early English organs, and new -builds in that style.

Vidoes from my Christmas concert, now available on You Tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKaATL4KYSU&feature=share&list=PLT4JufLurcFuFQHWey7Lhh6U34IP4oBtS
For some reason, the playist is in reverse order!

A significant proportion of this concert was played on a Mustel Harmonium.

Hi

I received my copy of this new release a couple of days ago, and found time to watch most of it yesterday evening.  I recommend it.  David Dunnett demonstrates the range of sounds available on the UK's third-largest church organ in a range of repertoire - including some unusual, but none-the-less effective pieces.  Plus a brief tour of the organ, and a commentary on his registration choices for one of the more romantic items.

The pack includes both DVD & Blu-Ray discs, and a CD (which  I've yet to listen to).

Enjoy.
