This organ (http://www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=D02032) seems to have been "restored" on the cheap.  It has a poor quality console from the last few decades, with drawstops too thin for the holes in the stop jambs.  The key and pedal actions are loose and heavy at the same time.  You can't depress the swell pedal fully without banging your knees on the console, and the music desk is only a couple of inches above the Swell manual and hides the back half of the keys from the player's view.  The Great Open Diapason basses in the front are collapsing.  To top it all off, the "plinth" on which the console rests stops immediately behind the pedalboard, which means that the stool is teetering on the edge, supported by the back of the choir stalls.  Playing it is not an enjoyable experience at all.

This organ (http://www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=H00084) in its current state.

It's really not working well now!  Several stops are silent, with tape over the corresponding stopheads.  The console has to be from the last restoration: it doesn't give one much faith to see the screws holding the console together looking quite so prominent...

Organs in danger / Re: St George Redditch

One of the specs I've seen for this instrument seemed to list the sole reed on the Great as being at 16'.  That can't be right, can it?

For my part, I have been snowed under with work.  I enjoy reading what others have to say, since I don't know a great deal about organs, but am keen to learn.  This year I have started taking formal lessons on the organ, having taught myself little bits and bobs.  I don't get the chance to travel much and see organs in other parts of the country, so hearing about them is interesting for me.

Could we have rough dimensions please?

Organs wanted / Re: Small Pipe Organ Wanted

Bourdon,

Paul has asked me to tell you to contact him directly - he doesn't always advertise all that he's got.  Details on this page (http://www.paulderrett.co.uk/recordings.html).  I hope that's a help.

Best wishes,
GB

Perhaps Google Paul Derrett.  He has some instruments in his workshop near Hull.

I am puzzled by the comment from flared_ophicleide regarding identifying the work of H&H - Canterbury is one of a number of cathedral organs which this firm has never touched.

I assume he's referring to the choice of stops in his own hypothetical design, e. g. the  "Harmonics" on the Tuba Organ.

This instrument will need a new home very soon.  The church are planning to put a new toaster in its stead.  Having played it, I can say that it is a nice instrument tonally; I was particularly impressed with the clear, singing tone of the Open Diapason.  It's quite small (I don't have the exact dimensions to hand), and it's mechanically quite simple.  IMHO it deserves a new home, though I would be tempted to change the Dulciana and "Harmonic Flute" (which is nothing of the sort) for an 8' flute and a Principal of similar type.

Here are some samples of Cecil Clutton's multum-in-parvo schemes:-

Organ registration / Re: 32ft on a manual

Jean Guillou's organ in St Eustache has a 32' Contrebasson in the Récit.

I've recently remembered about a hypothetical scheme that Stephen Bicknell had designed for the Willis company. He designed a scheme where most of the stops were available on two manuals. This seems to me to be an excellent way of getting the maximum versatility from a small number of stops. This is the scheme that David Wyld sent to me a while back.

Manual I
Open Diapason 8

Lieblich Gedact 8
Salicional 8
Principal   (or Gemshorn) 4
Flûte Harmonique   4
Fifteenth (or Flageolet) 2
Mixture 12.17
Cornopean (or Trumpet) 8

Manual II
Open Diapason 8
Lieblich Gedact 8

Salicional 8
Principal (or Gemshorn) 4
Flûte Harmonique 4
Fifteenth (or Flageolet) 2
Twelfth 2 2/3
Cornopean (or Trumpet) 8

Pedal:-
Bourdon   16

Couplers:-
Man II to Man I
Man I to Pedal
Man II to Pedal

"The only 'stop' which isn't the same on both manuals being the 2-rank Mixture, which draws on the Swell as a Twelfth."

"This specification could then have other things added to it, for example a Pedal Principal at 8ft and a 16ft Reed or some items deleted, if a smaller instrument were to be required."

I would love to see this happen somewhere. If I had the money, I would buy one for my local church... Alas, that is a wild fantasy. :(

Organ Builders / Re: Schulze pipe scales

Isn't St Peter's church in Hindley supposed to contain the most well-known Schulze string ranks? Or have I remembered this wrongly?

Thank you very much for your informative replies. Are there any diagrams of such actions available in the public domain?
#37
Could you be a bit more specific please?  ???

I have heard of mechanical-action organs where the console is at the side of the case, rather than at the front. For a tracker-action instrument with such a console, what is the layout of the action?

pcnd,

"Albans Cathedral" works! Note the lack of an apostrophe.
