Hi,
just to let you know that there is an AES Meeting next Tuesday.
London: Tuesday 10th June
High Resolution: Capturing the Moment
Bob Stuart, Meridian Audio and Peter Craven, Algol Applications

We see increasing interest in High Resolution analogue and digital audio and in recordings employing higher sample rates or bit depths than CD. Yet this trend seems unstructured, and progress to be stalled in coding concepts established in the late 1990s.
In this lecture we hope to show how recent findings in neuroscience, perception and signal processing seem, at least to us, to point in a new direction — one which promises higher quality than ever — a different framework and direction for audio in the 21st century.
Bob and Peter have cooperated together on analogue and digital audio over four decades; their work together has including fundamental topics in dither, noise-shaping, coding, lossless compression, archive and playback. This lecture is a rare chance to glimpse them in action and to see some recent and provocative thinking.

This month's lecture is being held at De Vere Holborn Bars, 138-142 Holborn, London, EC1N 2NQ. 6:30pm for 7pm start. All welcome

Hi,
well I think that several people did make enquiries if the " model " was included in the price.
the Harpsichord is probably unique and deserves a nice warm home.

regards Peter B

p.s. in the past when central heating wasn't common, how did Harpsichords not break strings and stay in tune ?

I thought it was excellent.  The 'sticky out bits' were very impressive.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some potential purchasers ask whether the 'model' is included in the price.

Hi, I just saw this on one of the music lists and was impressed that there is interest in Modern Harpsichords.
regards Peter B

The Department of Music at the University of Southampton (UK), together with The National Trust and the Arts and Humanities Research Council, announce TWO fully-funded collaborative PhD studentships, commencing 1 October 2013.  These studentships are for the project The Making of the Modern Harpsichord.

This project aims to investigate the history of harpsichord revival in England, concentrating on the period from the mid-1930s onward, and to determine how the reinvention of the harpsichord by its advocates – musicians, collectors, cataloguers, instrument makers – influenced contemporary creative practice as well as fostering projects of historical revival. It will consider the development of harpsichord repertory in the twentieth century, interrogating the intersections between the edition and performance of historical works, the composition of new music, and the physical and sonic qualities of the increasingly prominent and rapidly evolving instrument.  The practical context for both studentships will be provided by the National Trust, principally at Mottisfont Abbey, the childhood home of Raymond Russell – one of the most important figures in the mid-century early music revival – and at Fenton House (London) and Hatchlands (Surrey), both of which house important collections of
period keyboard instruments.

Studentships are open to eligible UK and EU resident students.  For further information and application details, please see

https://www.jobs.soton.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=245913F4

Closing date:  June 28, 2013.

Hi,
as there has been discussion here previously about the merits of Digital and Analogue recording I thought I would mention an article about the BBC's efforts.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22651126

on another point online players such as youtube do process / compress the audio ( and video )  a certain amount as far as I know.

Hi,
with regard to the Tascam 34b well at least you should be able to download the user manual which will give the setting up instructions. DBX or Dolby can help with the background noise but need to be set up correctly otherwise they can make things worse !

I agree the snow does seem to have reduced the amount of postings / emails generally.

regards Peter B

P.S. " if " I was going to record Pipe Organs I would want to use a digital recorder as well as an analogue machine in case anything broke down !
