This sounds very good news and very much a fitting home for it. Percy got the most incredible sounds out of it but that was just as much as him knowing what he was doing as it was to his circuitry. All the more remarkable for that and his recordings are testimony to that success.

Support for your museum may well grow and perhaps it might be worth forging liason with anyone friendly at the Science Museum.

Around 1780, the London 'musical emporium' of Longman & Broderip (later bought by a consortium headed by Clementi after both partners were declared bankrupt, despite the firm's huge success, in 1795) issued "Book IV" in a series for organ, entitled "Twelve Voluntaries and Fugues for the Organ or Harpsichord with rules for tuning by the celebrated Mr Handel". Clearly, only the unwary were likely to fall for the simple device of implying that the music was by Handel, but equally clearly L & B were hoping to benefit from such naivety. Inside the book, the tuning rules are given pride of place at the front (most unusual in itself), and once again attributed to Handel. My feeling is that they were aiming at two markets, and wished to disappoint neither; in other words, the music was aimed at the general public, and if they cared to think it was by Handel, well so much the better - meanwhile, serious musicians would understand the need to 'wrap' the tuning rules in some notes (impossible to sell them separately), no doubt the best available, and would know what they were buying. The psychology here implies to me at least, that L & B themselves believed the rules to be genuine (and as being prepared to inlay their own names on instruments made by others for them, I would argue that they were perhaps *best placed of all* to judge 'just how much can be got away with'. Their firm's inability to pay its creditors seems to have had much more to do with the ongoing war with France, than through any fault of their own).

Here's a sample of Jorgensen's enthusiasm for the Handel temperament (from his 800-page tome published by Michigan State University Press in 1991): "The ease of tuning is not the only indication that the Handel temperament was composed by a master. By comparing [seven other given temperaments], one can see that whoever authored the Handel Temperament had more understanding of classical harmonic balance than had anyone else before 1780."

MANDER ORGAN


This was built by Noel Mander himself in 1968 at St Paul's Public School, Westminster, London. The school then gave it to St John the Baptist Church, Portland, Dorset in the early 1990's, (WWW.PORTLANDPARISH.ORG) and it is used occasionally for weddings, and funeral. But the church has now a new electronic piano, and this organ is surplus to requirement.

It is a Manuel Piped Organ ( Unenclosed) CC-G (56 NOTES)

The organ is sited  in an apsidal chamber at gallery level at the east end of the church.

Henry Ainscough built the instrument in 1904 and it appears to be unaltered.

It has slider chests, tracker to the manuals and TP to the pedals (disconnected).

The Choir is unenclosed, its stops mounted on the Great chest.

It has a single, large reservoir.

The original feeder bellows drive wheels - originally motor driven - remain in place.

In spite of its tracker key action the organ has a very light touch.

Although now needing attention, including the disconnected pedal department, the instrument gives a very fine account of itself. Its Great chorus is bright and clear, the Swell reeds rich and full with the Mixture acting as an excellent bridge.

It has a most useful range of quiet stops, especially the Orchestral Gamba; they are clear, restrained and elegant. The Great Flute has unforced sonority, the Choir Flute is light. Nothing is overbearing; a satisfying blend.

This is altogether a splendid instrument.

That St James instrument is fascinating. Huge! In its 16 8 4 2 specification without mutations it's clearly equal temperament and with Keraulophon significantly typical of the time.

I had the good fortune a few weeks ago to meet up with Dr Laurence of Broadwood Pianos, the firm still making pianos by hand in England, and with archives extant going back to the beginnings of the firm.

We talked pitch and other things. If I remember correctly he told me that a Victorian tuner's bag that he had had three tuning forks  . . . for . . .

This makes rather a mess of the rather neat theories that people have, that A was once 432 "tuned to the vibrations of the earth" and that it went up and up.

He mentioned 444 as being an orchestral pitch in the 19th century - so people now having their instruments tuned at 444 are not being avant garde at all . . .

Certainly a set of pitch pipes that I have are much sharper than 440 . . .

Percy was a founder member of EOCS and entrusted his instrument to me rather than it going in the skip when he died. I'm ashamed to say that I have not found anyone wanting to play cinema organ repertoire and as a result have not paid attention to it. It needs circuit board interconnecting contacts cleaning. It has double touch on the lower keyboard and the upper manual is switchable between two sets of stops.

It's listed as 3 manual http://www.girdwood.co.uk/orglist5.html but at some stage it was 2 manual and Percy was frustrated by it. Accordingly with his electronics knowledge based on valves, he built an electronic 3rd manual. This instrument was derived from the principles that Percy developed for that instrument, executed in transistors and IC circuitry. It uses a top octave generator and octave dividers, and is as effective as you'll hear on those recordings on YouTube. It's an interesting and historic instrument in its way.

First thing to consider might be whether a mouse has run amok inside?

The service manual circuit diagrams are available from http://www.wdgreenhill.com/manu/johannus.htm

It's a start to ascertain whether the manuals are a 61x1 set of connexions or a 8x8 matrix.

I wonder if possibly the people at Makins who knew about analogue instruments might possibly have retired?

The transfer to the Great is interesting. I've just given away to a friend a set of two Johannus manuals with another pair destined for him to make up a four manual portable beast. These have a separate set of contacts on the great duplicating the swell contacts - so the Great has both Great and Swell contacts and there will be a switch to toggle between one and the other. I'd think the most likely explanation for your troubles might be a rodent nesting under the manuals or somewhere in the wiring.

The Suite Carmelite of Jean Françaix (1912-1997) was written in 1938 and was inspired by the novella The Last on the Scaffold by Getrud von Le Fort which was later adapted into a screenplay by Georges Bernanaos which in turn inspired Poulenc's dramatic 1956 opera Dialogue des Carmelites. Françaix presents us with simple and charming musical character sketches of the various nuns...

Built new in 1874 as a 2mp/13 for Emmanuel church, the organ has undergone substantial enlargement since then, expanding to 3mp/28, principally the work of two Preston builders Ainscough and Phillips. See NPOR N01183.

The instrument is in a poor mechanical state, but it projected a rich and comfortable tone into the building, the hooded Trumpet and Tromba stops particularly striking.

Unfortunately the building has dry rot and must now be vacated. The organ, which has served the church splendidly for nearly 150 years, has to be removed and relocated to avoid its destruction.

It is redundant. It is offered desirably in whole, and is immediately available.

Buyer makes all arrangements for dismantling, packing and transport.

Aah. Good :-) She manifests with five heads so Chloé will probably be able to drive you there after her tuning job if you search out Mina, Kira and Joon. The artist is Patrick Wise for whom I have great admiration.

If only Chloé could find an organist for Colgate in these two commitments for April and May . . .
