Title: NPOR
Post by: diapason on December 10, 2012, 12:21:15 PM
I sent the details of my house organ to NPOR a few weeks ago.  Had an email back the same day as they couldn't read my Mac file.  I changed it, and they confirmed that they could now read it.  Just wondering how long it might be before it appears on the database?

I submitted some information about the organ from St Mark's, Battersea Rise several months ago, the information was acknowledged but I was warned that the update might take 6 months.

I sent an update and pictures in on the 15th September 2011, so a bit more than 6 months !

I won't wait with bated breath then!

Thanks,

Hi

It's, sadly, getting on for 12 months delay at present - partly down to the fact that we're in the process of training new editors, which takes up some of the limited time that the existing team have in mentoring them.  Hopefully before long the backlog will start to reduce.  We will get to everything eventually!  All the editors are volunteers, and NPOR work has to be fitted in around other commitments and "the day job!".

Every Blessing

It seems a pity that such a valuable database is so poorly resourced.  Might there be scope for designing a proforma for data entry, completed by the user, which could be approved and added to the database by the administrators without the need for re-typing the data?

Tony - I have offered to assist with this (and, presumably, receive training as an editor), if it is any help. So far, I have yet to receive an acknowledgement from your colleague.... (It certainly never surfaced in my 'in-box'.)

I appreciate that they are volunteers, but such long delays are frustrating and unhelpful from this side....

It does seem to be under resourced and it is rather frustrating to contributors when information takes so long to be recorded. There is also the danger that in some cases events may overtake the database and amendments may already be out of date before they are entered.

On the face of it the above idea would appear to be a good one. On-line forms are used in some government organisations. Are there any experts out there who could comment on the practical difficulties?

Anyway, whatever the shortcomings, many thanks to those volunteers who give up their valuable time to maintain the system.

Hi

@PCND - I don't know why no-one has got back to you.  Maybe another e-mail?

We are looking at methods of submission - including some sort of on-line form.  It might ease things a bit - especially for regular contributors who can enter info in the appropriate format, but checking will still take time - as will sorting out the security issues of access to the system (not my field, thankfully).

Every Blessing

Whilst the NPOR seem good in recording amendments to the text so we can see when updating has taken place, the same does not seem to happen for the picture information (unless it is in a file hidden from public view).  Two of the new crop of editors seem intent on removing established pictures and replacing them with their own later versions thus removing part of the historical record.  Makes one want to give up!

Sadly, am still waiting, after 8 months for this to appear.  Re-reading Tony's post, I might have a bit longer to wait yet.  Hopefully, the backlog will soon be cleared.  Can we help?

Indeed - I am still waiting for my offer of help to be acknowledged. Unfortunately I cannot find my original e-mail, so I cannot re-send.

However, I would be very willing to help with the uploading and amending of NPOR records. Tony, if you read this, perhaps you could kick things in motion, please?

Hi

All I can suggest is that you send a new e-mail to the NPOR office letting the project manager know that you'd be interested in becoming an editor.  We are still training the last batch of editors from what I hear, so I'm not sure when we'll be ready to take on others - hopefully sooner rather than later.

Every Blessing

Sadly, my house organ is still not shown on NPOR.  I submitted the details in November 2012 (as noted at the start of this thread).

Hi

It should appear soon - we still have a rather large backlog - not helped by training new editors (which in the longer term will help things move quicker).  Also, please remember that all of the editors are volunteers - and have other commitments.  Personally, I've not been able to do anything regularly since Christmas due to pressure of other things.

Every Blessing

Still waiting for this to be shown - it's been 2 years now.  Very disappointing personally, and, of course, if this is the norm then the database is, sadly, very out of date.
