Restoring pipe organs / Pedal Acoustic Bass 32
April 12, 2011, 01:26:48 PM
Hi

I have never been totally satisfied with the sound produced by Quinted 32s, often they Quint is derived from the Bourdon which is often far too loud. I recently played a small organ with a synoptic spec as follows; 16, 10.2/3, 8, 5 1/3, 4, all derived from the one Bourdon unit. The 10.2/3 was useless and certainly did not produce a realistic 32 sound.
I have heard of, but never some across, organs which have a 32 the lowest octave being quinted off a seperate octave of Quint pipes, these standing on their own chest and voiced quietly to provided the needed 5th. Does any member know of any places where this has been done?

Hi

St Edmunds Dudley has had to replace its pipeorgan due  to this problem. Trevor Tipple was ready to begin work putting the new building frame in for this then the floor was found to be unsafe . The organ being installed is from a Methodist Church in Nantwich and was originally built by J.J.Binns, I will add more details about this when the work is complete.
Going back to Tonys post, the West Midlands has been hit heavily by lead thefts, my own church has suffered this three times. Unfortunately we can only replace like by like and any other material is unacceptable. We are looking at paints to apply to try and deter the thefts.

Organ building and maintenance / Re: Humidifiers
March 19, 2011, 12:28:00 AM
Hi Tony

Have you a copy any where or suggest where I can download it? The whole thing is a mystery to me.
The present unti was intalled by Duplex who looked after it for a couple of years and we havent heard off them since, it replaced an earlier W&W unit but there are no valves on any of the soundboards.

Best wishes

Organ building and maintenance / Humidifiers
March 18, 2011, 01:51:59 PM
Does anyone know if a valve or valves have to be fitted to each soundboard where a humidifier is installed? The organ I play has such a unit which only feeds the main wind supply into the organ, the organ builder who looks after it is of the opinion that there should be valves on each sound board. Can anyone help?
The organ tuners say if these had been fitted we would not have the runnings there are now after the organs recent exposure to high heat for 3 days.

I know this organ, it was in St Francis Friar Park Wednesbury and has been replaced by an organ by Rembrant.

The console is well used, a lot of that is its age, it all still works but the electronics could do with replacing, the console would after some love and care be reusable.

It would make, even as it stands, a reasonable home organ. Wish I had the space.

Thank you Barry for your post which detailed the procedure in great detail for us.

I agree with your comments about some mechanical actions.

HI

I will add it again David, I removed it in view of TGs comment. (If you wish!!!!!)

I have the contact details of the Archdeacon of Taunton if any member would like to write to him directly, I am unsure what he can do at this stage as I don't know if they have got as far as applying for a Faculty. Could I invite Barry Williams to comment on the legalities involved in both applying for a Faculty and the process involved.

Several years ago I helped with both the sales and installation of Makin instruments, I remember spending a couple of days at one Methodist Church removing, packing and storing the pipework of their old organ before Makins team arrived. I know at least this pipework is safe!!!

I regularly play one of Makins large 3 manual "Monarche" instruments, the tonal quality is very poor but this is simply caused by the poor speakers and amplification.

One of my friends is a Vicar to a group of Parishes within the Ilminster Deanery, I will try and find out who the organ advisor is, but if the Church has made its mind up to go the electronic route only lack of funds and a failed Faculty application can stop this.

I can only hope sense prevails and the pipeorgan is repaired, as Jonathan says work can be carried out without a major rebuild to keep it playing.

Hi John

Welcome to the forum, your introduction was most informative and thankyou for taking the time.

I have read your post about Crewkerne and I have to admit that situation makes me want to cry.

I met H A Bate once at St Marys Shrewsbury, he was an excellent organist and I am pleased that his daughter is now looking after the organ he designed.

I hope you will enjoy this site and contribute when you feel able. (It is addictive!!!!)

Best wishes

This is a quote from their recent magazine;
Readers will be aware that there has been concern over a lengthy period now about the deteriorating condition of the church organ, and debate about how to deal with the problem. I reported in the December edition of "Voice" that the PCC would return to this difficult issue at its January meeting.
The PCC passed a resolution that "in view of the deteriorating condition of the pipe organ, and in the light of current pressures on the church's resources, the PCC considers that a digital organ should be acquired, but only when financial circumstances permit". This view is being taken because a digital organ would be a great deal cheaper than restoring the pipe organ, and the sound it produced in the trial was good, in the view of most churchgoers.
It should be emphasised that the church is not in a financial position to acquire a digital organ in the near future. There are other demands on any capital resources which come to hand, such as repair of the chancel roof, and in any case, the church has an ongoing problem meeting day-to-day running costs. If anyone wishes to contribute towards a digital organ, the PCC Treasurer would be pleased to receive donations.

John Clotworthy, Churchwarden

They seem to have been very badly advised, I wonder who they are buying the digital organ from.

Electronic Organs / Re: Makin take over Copeman Hart

How odd, I always thought CH were in a different league, their consoles are far superior to Makins. Did not Makins do the same thing with Bradford and that company ceased shortly after? I know John Pilling acquired it, one of their last organs was Pershore Abbey.
