MM is quite correct, although I have no personal experience of mutton-head stew!

As a primary school teacher (about to retire, thank God) I agree that many children are not used to doing what their parents tell them to do.  When I apply the school rules strictly, some of them are initially quite shocked.

Unfortunately, some of them twist their parents around their little fingers and insist that they come in and assure me what little darlings they are.

That's the real problem: the current generation of parents.

I regret that Islamists are ever likely to find any commonality with anyone else!

It sounds very interesting to me too, as I am just about to retire.  Unfortunately, I live even further away!

Our new instrument at St. Mathew-in-the-City in Auckland (New Zealand) has a manual 32ft - see the spec in the lowest section of the page at     http://www.willis-organs.com/auckland_general.html

It is much used!

Is this the same one on the Pedal, duplexed?  I think that, whenever there is a suitable (ie, not too overpowering) 32' on the Pedal, it should be available on the Great (or vice versa) as the cost would be minimal.

I note that the unit under discussion uses an 8" speaker.  When I made a pair of hi-fi speakers a long time ago, I chose a pair of 12" units (plus tweeters) as we thought that the bigger the speaker the bigger the bass.

Recently, when we bought a new TV and sound system I found it interesting that the sub-woofer, although having only an 8" speaker, at least equalled the bass output of my home-made speakers.  Technology moves on, I suppose.  Also, as I understand it, 'long throw' bass speakers can shift as much air as much larger conventional speakers at low frequencies.

I wish I understood more about these things!

This is interesting.  Presumably, the 'saucepan' must have an opening at the back somewhere in order for sound to enter the extended bass cone.

Also, it is noteworthy that many modern sub-woofers are downward firing and can utilise the room itself to provide increased bass.  On the other hand, many speaker manufacturers advise against siting speakers in corners as it produces excessive bass(!).

As far as I know, this is in addition to the whole of the Pedal being available on the IV manual.

This is rather interesting . . . is it that the whole of the 4th manual is available on pedal? This is the case with the 3rd manual at St Maximin

Best wishes

David P

Sorry, my mistake (or is it 'my bad' these days?).  It is actually a Pedal to IV Manual coupler, that is, the Pedal stops are NOT individually available on the IV Manual, as I mistakenly wrote.

Also, my original message should say that the Principal 32' is 'NOW' available on the Hauptwerk and not, as I wrote, 'NOT' available.

I was either in a rush or my mind is going soggy with old age.  I prefer the former!

The 'new' (2002) wood Pedal Principal 32' at Cologne Cathedral is not available on the Hauptwerk.  I'd have thought that this would be too powerful for manual use, although I haven't heard it.

As far as I know, this is in addition to the whole of the Pedal being available on the IV manual.
