Hi David

How does one go about joining the EOCS ?

I know I am miles away from the location of the meetings, but I think discussion via the electronic highway would be beneficial

Many thanks

Hi David,

Unfortunately I think Hugo Rifkind's opinions about Atheists is rather born from the media's love of labelling people and people's opinions, just as they do with people who believe in God.

Do you suppose that Hugo has never thought of helping anyone because he couldn't be bothered, or has he just not thought of helping anyone because it hasn't crossed his mind. Maybe he thinks that it is something that just religious people do, perhaps he is correct, maybe people just don't stop and think? Does it take god to do this, perhaps it does, perhaps is doesn't, it depends on the person thinking and everyone is different.

I think you are also being rather derogatory with your comments about Atheists especially as you comment that they may have some dark buried understanding of something else than just the norm (whatever that might be?? Football, Eastenders, DFS sofas?). Can a person not believe in an Atheists viewpoint and not also think beyond then end of their coffee table?

I think the incident with St Paul's and the protestors says a lot about Christianity and the difference in opinion and thought within the members of the Church of England. Should they abstain and not get involved, should they whole heartily show hospitality to them whatever the cost and consequence? I cannot answer only they members of the Anglican Church can answer

I also understand your questioning about atheists playing the organ in the church, however strange it is, it does happen. Maybe things are not completely as people would have thought, maybe people's reasoning is of their own doing and maybe some people like to adopt certain ideas but also reject others. This is what makes us human, and our experiences mould our thoughts and understanding of life.

Just my two pennies worth!

Best Regards

Marc

P.S. My wife says the St Paul's debacle is all the fault of Deans!  ;)

Another basic but usable 2 manual + pedal tracker action organ which surely can be saved. It even has an oboe!

Believers' Corner / Re: Halloween and organ recitals
October 23, 2011, 12:13:36 AM

Yes anything to get rid of the current practices with regards to random cold callers at Halloween would be a good thing! However I do get lots of different religious denominations knocking repeatedly at my door also, so maybe nothing new there with regards to liveprayerchurch's radical change to things

However surely it is a light hearted affair and should only be seen as such, and in terms should not be taken seriously?

QuoteJust what ignorance causes people to want to do away with a healthy pipe organ in refurbishing a church?

I suppose if there is no-one to play the organ to a reasonable standard then like many they become no more than ornaments.

I'm sure we have discussed before that the supply of new organists must be increased to help with the publicity of the instrument, but how, what is the best plan of action?

Electronic Organs / Re: The origin of Holy Toast . . .

And I thought my Hammond L101 with a dozen or so valves was complex (in a retro sort of way!)

I'd imagine that you wouldnt need any form of central heating with 90 valves going!

A nice console to use as a basis for a new modern organ

Humm! I'm not really convinced.

David, do you think that people who do not believe in god are "evil"?

As a Christian do you not believe that fundamentally all people are good as they are all made in the image of god?

Is it indeed fair to take such a one sided opinion?

Hi Tony

You are completely correct, and I suppose I don't really have foundation to criticize any form of worship considering my own views and lack of faith. I will stick to the matter of the organ!

I've just watched a couple of the videos on the Ruach Ministries website, I'm not entirely sure it the organ will fit in with their form of worship!

I hope I am incorrect?!?

I'm sure you can all comment on their style of worship! (I'm sorry I dont approve)

It's a funny old world!

Maybe future attendees of the new church will become to like or perhaps love the organ? who knows? if they give it a chance and don't just mothball it then it might just happen

Its better that than to be consigned to another organ grave stone!

Sounds like a cardioid bass array, i.e. directional bass

Lots of live event sound systems are now using this technology to try and overcome noise pollution

Sounds interesting!

What she doing with those pedals! eek!

Quite a rarity, six manuals

And quite an amazing painted facade to the organ at the Waldsassen Basilica.

Hi David

Unfortunately the human race as a whole does not live in harmony with the earth like other species on this planet. Humankind is more akin to a parasite; it spreads across the earth using up its natural resources at an exponential rate. Our politicians say we are doomed without economic growth, but why do we need growth to just use up more and more of Earth's bounty? The reason is that the human race is every expanding, it is growing over generations and so requires more and more to sustain it. Is this a good thing? No. Should people stop having children? Possibly yes.

I would be interested to know your thoughts with regards mankind's ongoing relationship with the earth, do you think religion is the answer, or is the realisation that fundamental problem is the issue of our planets ability to sustain our ever increasing numbers.

Materialism is one thing, but there are more basic issues here with regards to food, water and general sustainability

Right up my street :)

I like Jonathan Scott he is one of the more down to earth organ performers out there

Hello,

Yes professional solid state systems are very expensive especially when considering a small home organ.

You could use the traditional Kimber Allen 64 gang relay switches, and if you need some unification of the ranks use diodes. This is what I did with my great manual, which basically has three ranks of pipes but has five stops available. Further details can be seen at www.thecavendishorgan.com.

The KA 64 way switches can normally be found on ebay for 20 or 30 quid

You could also try this guy here http://classicorgans.co.uk/

I think he is still going and his prices seemed to be pretty down to earth.

I'm currently developing a basic system for my swell manual, but as usual things are progressing slowly!

Good luck

He certainly has an opinion!

Some would say NO and a maverick he may be, but surely, whatever his opinions about organs within churches, he has a voice which does get noticed. If it advances the realisation of the King of instruments then in my mind this is a good thing!

The organ world needs eccentric characters, without them we will get consigned to the stuffy dustbin!

I'm still sure he will mellow as he gets older

Organs wanted / Re: Practice Organ Parts - needed
August 18, 2011, 10:27:43 PM
You could go for option 1 and put it behind shutters in case you find it rather vocal. My 8ft Clarabella rank from a N&L organ is pretty loud but just about acceptable in a small space.

The Gemshorn will probably be too loud. I find my dulciana rank quite acceptable in a house especially considering alot of people dismiss this rank when used in a large space; a possible quieter alternative to the Gemshorn even though this might sound a bit daft?

Cheers

Hi David

A polar plot in both vertical and horizontal planes would be very interesting to see, and I suppose for starters just for a single pipe.

I might send Colin Pykett and email to see if he has any further information

Does anyone have a polar plot of an organ pipe?

I wonder if anyone has done such a thing?

Many thanks
