Organs Preserved / Organ in Taunton saved
January 05, 2012, 02:19:33 PM
I have heard today that this organ http://www.npor.org.uk/cgi-bin/Rsearch.cgi?Fn=Rsearch&rec_index=N06884 is being removed from the church by Matthew Copley.  It is a very fine instrument, which was once part of the largest organ in the world at the time, in the Apollonicon in Regent's Park, London.  I was organist of the church prior to 2008 and did some research into it's history which I have sent to Matthew.  The church were going to throw the organ into a skip despite the faculty for it's removal requiring that it was preserved.  Matthew is planning to remove the organ to his workshop and look for a new home.  Deo Gracias.

I've recently bought a house organ which was originally built in the 1920s by the Aeolian Orchestrelle Company for a Mr Ainslie who is believed to have lived in the Bridgnorth area and to have been a patron of the Aeolian company.  After the war, the organ was rebuilt in a house in Newport, South Wales, probably by  A.E. Davies of Northampton.  New pipework was added, by Grant, Gegens and Rippin (later Bradbeer) and new chest magnets were fitted in the 1980s by Roger Taylor.  The organ was moved yo York in 1994 by Geoffrey Coffin (Principal Pipe Organs).

I am trying to fill in some gaps in the history and hope that  some forum members may be able to help.  I would like to know more about Mr Ainslie and his house in Bridgnorth, Shropshire.  I am also trying to trace any records from the now defunct companies of Alfred E. Davies and Grant Degens and Rippin/Bradbeer.

Many thanks,
Nigel

Having just sold my Johannus organ, I have a Johannus surround amplifier and a set of speakers for sale.  The amplifier is a Johannus DAK-4.  It has DIN sockets for 4 speakers each of which have individual volume controls.  There are a large number of 'programmes' for different acoustic characteristics and volume for main and reverb.  The faceplate with the control labels is missing, but it is straightforward to set up.  I downloaded a manual for a similar model and this is included as is a DIN lead for connection to a Johannus organ and a set of speaker leads with DIN plugs.

The speakers consist of two column speakers about 40" high x12" wide and 18" deep.  They are divided internally into two halves, with two sets of terminals.  Each section contains a Vistaton 8" F170 large range speaker and a TW70 tweeter.  The bass speaker is 40" high x 18" wide x 18" deep and contains a Monacor SP300P speaker.  All the speakers are built into very strong and tidy cabinets with a light oak veneer.

Offers welcome before I put them on Ebay.  Located in Somerset.

FOR SALE and WANTED / Wanted - Console Plinth
December 07, 2011, 08:42:31 PM
This is almost certainly  an impossible 'ask', but I'll try before I go out searching for a custom build.  I'm looking for a base/plinth on castors about 5' square to enable me to place a console so that it can be moved.  I need this for the console for a house organ which I will need to move occasionally to enable access to hatch in the wall which gives access to electric meters and fuses.

Organs in danger / York
December 07, 2011, 10:02:21 AM
I've just spent a couple of days in York and was disappointed to see this very fine three-manual in St Michael Le Belfry out of use.

http://www.npor.org.uk/cgi-bin/Rsearch.cgi?Fn=Rsearch&rec_index=N12769

The console was surrounded by boxes and a church member told me that he hadn't heard it played in more than 20 years.  At the front of the church is a large stage with music stands and there is a large and comprehensive mixing desk in a 'control room' at the back.  The church was decribed to me a 'happy-clappy on stilts'.  Very sad.

At St Helen's, Stonegate, the church is no longer used for Anglican worship but hosts a weekly Chinese service in Mandarin for which it appears that an electric 'piano' is used.  The organ looks to be neglected.

I wonder whether readers of this forum might be interested in this site:

Some of the vacancies look interesting and the attitude of some of the clergy is reassuring.

Restoring pipe organs / Ipswich - St Clement's
November 04, 2011, 02:51:53 PM
I am researching the history of the Holdich/Bishop organ from St Clement's which was moved in 1982 to Selworthy in Somerset where I play.  I wonder whether there are any forum members from the Ipswich area who remember the organ in St Clement's and have any photographs or memories of it.  I have already spoken to Bishop's who have been very helpful and obviouslt have the NPOR entries and a copy of the Faculty to move the organ to Somerset.

Organs wanted / Redundant French organ?
September 06, 2011, 09:51:36 AM
A friend has asked me to try to find out whether there is a website listing redundant French organs. She is enquiring on behalf of a college in Latvia.  Any help appreciated.

I've just noticed a couple of decent consoles on Ebay.  One is a Compton and the other a Rushworth & Dreaper Apollo.  There are also various pedalboards and other parts.

Organs on eBay or for urgent sale / Practice Organ
July 09, 2011, 04:10:46 PM
This has just appeared on Ebay.  It sounds interesting - if I hadn't just arranged to buy a small pipe organ then I'd buy it myself.

House Organs / Getting a new project
July 05, 2011, 10:30:44 PM
An organbuilder friend is clearing out his workshop and has offered me a two-rank, one manual & pedal pipe organ.  It was originally a 'Priory' organ by Geo Osmond of Taunton, dating from the 70's.  As it originally came from a crematorium in Devon, it probably accompanied the funerals of several of my relations.  The pipework has been re-used in other organs, but it would probably have been too loud for my flat.  So, I'll be looking out for a small scale metal stopped diapason and a gemshorn or salicional rank, on about 2.3/4" wg.  I'll know more when I get down to pick it up later this month. I'll then be working out how to reassemble it.  The stopped diapason rank was enclosed, but I may decide to enclose it all for the benefit of the neighbours  :-[  So, the toaster will be for sale to make space.  I'll probably be picking your brains as I work out how to get it playing again.
