Hi,
from one of the email lists, it seems that a medieval style Pipe Organ has been created at St Fagans, near Cardiff.
<http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-13009871>

there is also a short sound sample / interview  on the web page.

Hi,
I think that it is a minefield.
from what I understand [ which may be incorrect ] there are different copyright laws in different countries, so what may be in the public domain in one country may not be in another....
so it depends where , for example , a web site is hosted as to whether the music there is Public domain or not.

Hi,
I have seen someone play a Hammond Organ with the Drawbars set so that I think
they were getting a resultant Bass from the lower manual. there were only three ? of the lowest drawbars used
they were playing single notes in a bass line.
I don't know if this would work with playing chords ?

regards Peter B

P.S this isn't related to the above but on some of the Hammonds the Drawbars on the manuals control  near sine waves but the couple of Drawbars on the pedals have a combination of sine waves mixed in on each one.

I guess most will have noticed that electronic organs never have resultant bass stops (at least, I've never seen one that did).  The reason is that they don 't need to unless a customer insisted on it.

All the best

Hi,
I think this is a different setup but there seems to have been an Album recorded on a Rodgers organ with 94 speakers.
Album cover of the recording at http://www.pstos.org/recordings/baker/the-sound-of-94-speakers/cover-l.jpg

Hi,
the Pipe Organ from All Saints Carshalton is presently being renovated by Willis in Liverpool.
after talking to the congregation it seems it may take a year or so.
I wonder if they [ Willis ]  are having an open day this year ?

Hi,
an interesting topic. I just wondered if I was correct in thinking that if a rank of pipes were tuned one or two beats per second sharp for each note then this would mean that the difference in frequency between the main rank and the Celeste would change from the bottom to the top of the rank ?
I seem to remember that this is one reason some electronic instruments don't sound quite right as they have a Celeste rank which is tuned by a constant frequency above the standard rank.

Hi,
I know that at some point there are going to be problems in California.
BUT I hope that it won't be for several years, so at least any lessons [ to do with the Nuclear power stations ] from the Horrible events in Japan can be learnt from.

Will California be next?

There's clearly a series of submarine crustal activity . . .

Organs in danger / Estimates and charging
March 16, 2011, 04:01:27 PM
Hi,
this is an interesting discussion.
firstly I do work for myself but I don't work on Pipe Organs. I used to give free estimates for the repairs I did.
the reasons were that I felt that I would be more likely to get work this way.
I found however that in a "few" cases people would ask me for an estimate on one bit of equipment, and then I wouldn't be asked to complete the work, then I would be asked to look at another piece of equipment by the same people.....
and so on.
this meant that I ended up providing many estimates for people rather than actually getting repair work done [ and being paid for it ].
so I decided to start charging for providing estimates, but to keep the charge at a reasonable
level. I don't mean to indicate  that any of the charges mentioned here are unreasonable !
This does seem to have worked from my point of view, as if the repair estimate is not accepted at least I have some money towards time and possible travelling costs etc
of course every industry is different and what may work in one industry may not work in another .....

I'm not going to start on the minefield  of  relevant qualifications !

regards Peter B

The question of charging for reports has been debated extensively within IBO and elsewhere.  Whilst I respect your view, you are in a very tiny minority on this point.  I hope you will agree with me that producing a report is a time-consuming and costly exercise.  One of the reasons for charging is to stop churches (and sometimes 'independent' organ advisers) from obtaining multiple quotes.  I recall seeing one church proudly stating on its fund-raising brochure that it had obtained thirteen (!) quotes from organ builders.

Hi,
I don't know if it would help but certainly some of the forums I am on let people join only when they have answered [ correctly ]  some questions relevant to the forum they want to join.
this does seem to reduce the number of posts adverts for "enhancing products"
one of the problems with the internet is that it is easy for anyone to get an email address and unless you check you don't quite know who you are talking with.

regards Peter B

in case anyone needs to know a little more about myself, I've been a member of Eocs for about seven ? years now, originally trained as an electronics engineer. and have been fascinated with the Pipe Organ / Harpsichord / Reed organ for much longer.

Hi!

It's great if new members might introduce themselves here and tell us about your organ interests . . . and of course this will assist in our recognition of your genuine interest in due course when we have to take editorial decisions based on mere appearances. . .

Best wishes

Hi,
I just saw these courses as an advert on ebay !
sorry if they have been posted here before.

I wish that there had been courses like this when I was at school......
making the Organ accessible to young people can't be a bad thing.
