Harpsichords / Re: V and A instruments
November 20, 2010, 03:47:06 PM
Hi,
I think that some of the instruments were going to be on show at the Horniman Museum in Forrest Hill. But they didn't seem to have much space to be able to display them when I last visited.

Hi,
just in case anyone is interested, the British Clavichord Society has arranged a Clavichord afternoon at Grosvenor Chapel, South Audley Street London W1k 2PA on the 20th Nov 2010.
Admission is £ 10-00 and there is a recital by David Griffel at 3-45 pm, of Spanish Music.
earlier on there is a talk about the history of Clavichord recordings and an introduction to the music in the recital.    at 4-30 pm  there are refreshments and a chance to play a clavichord !  more info
www.clavichord.org.uk

regards Peter B

P.S for those beginners like myself the Clavichord has a different action to that of a harpsichord which makes it different ( and difficult) to play but can make it more expressive

Restoring pipe organs / Pipe organs around Carshalton
November 10, 2010, 02:37:56 PM
Hi,
following on from another topic, just to let you know that as far as I know the Pipe organ in All Saints Church Carshalton is going to be restored later on this year.
they have had some concerts but the last Concert featured two pianos rather than the Organ.
the audience was allowed to vote for which Piano they liked the best !

Electronic Organs / Re: SOS - SOS Makin organ

Hi,
pleased to hear that the instrument is working again in time.
I guess you were lucky that you didn't let out the magic smoke that must be inside most ic's as when the smoke escapes the ic's don't work anymore !

Hi,
I saw this video mentioned on one of the music lists I am on and thought I would post it here and see what everyone thought.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71iUAFFQ8ik
I have always thought you would play the Harpsichord sitting down, but there must be more to things than I realized .....

Hi,
I  was looking for something else and I just found this article about the Organ at St Botolph's Aldgate London, which has been restored quite recently. they mention that the Temperament is a "Harris Special " and not suitable for the complete Bach 48 as they put it.
any comments ?

Electronic Organs / Re: Allen from 1962

Hi,
thanks for posting !
I haven't seen this video before but note that in the description they mention that the electronics takes up a lot of space ..... which probably means that there are many independent ranks of free phase generators. Since this is analogue electronics there are slight changes in the tuning of the oscillators which simulates the effect of many ranks of pipes.

Hi,
a demonstration would be very interesting.
I think you make some very interesting and valid points in your post.

Hello all

If anyone is interested in hearing an A-B comparison of 4 8' foundations played through one pair of "speakers" and then four pairs, I'd be very happy to provide it and serious demonstration pieces will follow in due course.

Warm regards

Electronic Organs / Re: Recordings and beat Frequencies
October 09, 2010, 11:36:53 PM
Hi,
I think that recordings don't normally give the same results as our ears do !
and there is also the data compression that youtube uses ......
I think that maybe there should be a section here about recording techniques and Pipe organs as I think there is a LOT more than meets the eye ( or ear ! ).
I think that how beat frequencies are perceived may depend on the waveform of the sounds involved, the level of the sound and also may be different in different parts of the room.
I think the room position can have an effect as it may alter how the two sounds are mixed together ( and also how any natural reflections affect things ).
there are, I think different techniques used for where the sounds are going to be played back over headphones ( binaural ) or speakers.
I wonder if different techniques would be appropriate in the same way for recording samples used [ for example ] with Hauptwerk ? or even for youtube recordings .....
I hope that someone with more experience than me can comment.....

I'm not at all sure that recordings always give the same results as our ears directly. That of course is also the perplexity that we suffer in recording organ samples and playing them back as electronic organs are all about nowadays, and by the same token this is also an impediment to conveying experimental results via recordings to a remote listener. And even then, I discovered I was wrong in an assumption I had made, that beat frequencies were only heard on loud sounds. Testing the piano with a friend, my friend went to the back of the room, where the sound level was much lower, and could hear the beating of two notes if he listened, at the back of the room rather than at the keyboard or near the strings.

Best wishes

Electronic Organs / Re: Speaker considerations
October 09, 2010, 12:45:04 AM
Hi,
sorry if it is an obvious question but why shouldn't the defects in the speakers be used to add their own character to the sound ?
I can see that if the characteristics are not consistent or the speakers are being over driven so they might fail then I can understand why not.
I think that any speaker system will have some effect on the sounds produced and some speaker systems may respond in a way ( even if it is unintended ) that suits some Organs sounds.
on another subject, I always thought that the rear channels on a  surround sound  system had less information than the main front channels ? so if this is so then I think it makes sense that you wouldn't need speakers as large or as good quality as the front channels.
on the subject of speakers Yamaha did use a special speaker on a couple of their 1970's ? Organs that was shaped in the outline of a human ear ! I think they mentioned that it gave a natural sound ! ( I can't confirm if it did or not )

regards Peter B

P.S if it is relevant I feel I am more of an Engineer that a Physicist ! but probably not enough of either .........

We should not be using defects in the speaker to add their own character to the sound; this character should be in the original sample (or simulation if the sound is being modelled).

Electronic Organs / Re: Speakers and Samples

Hi,
well I think that if you are using Organ samples with a lot of reverb already present on them, then using headphones would be the best way of listening to the sounds.
Otherwise the Reverb on the samples may clash with the reverb/ sound of the room you are in.
and you would need to ( I think ) be careful with speaker placement as having the speakers in the front of the room means that you get all the sound ( main signal + reverb ) from only two points in the front direction, plus the small amount of Reverb from the back of the room.

An acquaintance who demoed a high profile software organ for the EOCS in the summer using wet samples, for which hi-fi reproduction is required, but tailored more specifically to organs, has modified a pair of  Celestion Ditton 200 speakers bought on eBay and for less than £150 has a system that sounds very clear and interesting.

Hi!

A console ripe for midi conversion has just arrived in my barn and is offered free to anyone who would like it.

61 note manuals, 25 note pedalboard, not ideal but usable

Hi,
it is very nice to have the music score and also be able to hear some good Organists play the piece on youtube. ( and try to follow the score as the music is played ! ).
a couple of questions ( which show my Musical ignorance )
what do the two clefs at the beginning of the piece mean ? I mean the two clefs before the main section of the piece. The second question, I'm not sure what the (PED) means next to the bass clef ? does it mean that the lowest part of the music would be played on the pedals ?
and if so was there any reason they didn't write the music on two staves and one stave for the pedals ? sorry if the questions have obvious answers !
