Hi,
in reply,
I don't know why I am interested ! :-\
I guess listening to the Organist entertains on BBC radio in the early 1970's must have had some effect ..........
I think that at the time I felt that the Church style of Organ playing was too formal.
[ note that this was probably due to the limited range of classical Organ music that I had been exposed to at the time ].

Hi,
while looking for something else I found that the book originally written by George Laing Miller in 1913 has been published online for free.....

Hi,
I always thought the reply to the question was " as many as reasonably possible " !
an interesting experiment  .....
I'm going to listen to the you tube clip again when I am less tired.

Hi!

Elsewhere there has been much recent controversy as to how many channels an electronic organ should have.

Hi,
ok I see you mean that the dynamic range of the organ is not great enough rather than it being too loud the whole time.
if there isn't physical space for the pedal pipes, then how about a quiet Dulciana at 8 ft / 4ft pitch ? would this mean having another additional chest for the pipes ? if the Organ has electric action then could you have separate solenoids for the quiet Dulciana, then would it be possible to use these for a separate manual at a later date if funds were available.
an interesting thread ....

Hi
I think you make several good points here. there was a recent article that said that people who play computer games may be better at dealing with unexpected circumstances and making quick judgements. But even so I can't see how having games that are so violent ( without any consequences that you would get in real life if you acted like that  ) can be good.

Hi!

I'm sure that this repetition of line of thought is helpful and I'm sure that play-acting re-enacting acts of violence with computer games or bang-bang-bang toy guns desensitises the subject to the realities of what those objects and actions do, enabling them to do such things all the more easily in real life. There are things in fantasy random thought land that occur in our brains which are constantly ruled out by the error checks or reality checks or sanity checks applying cause and effect to predict what the results will be. But once those processes are broken down by the neurons having followed similar paths before with computer realities or pointing a toy gun at a person and imitating a shooting noise, the error checks and reality checks can be all too slow to kick in.

Best wishes

Hi,
I'm only a beginner, but I wonder if adding a rank of pedal pipes ( 16ft ) would improve things ?
Of course I guess it depends on how large the blower is as to what pipes you could add.
you mention it is too loud, is it too loud to the organist, or the congregation ?
I'm going to be most interested to see other replies as well....

Hi,
I think you have hit the nail on the head about electronic instrument needing to be voiced to suit their location.
Of course I think it is a real skill to be able to do this with either a Pipe or Electronic Organ.
I wonder if some Digital instruments may be easier to voice than others ?
I don't know how easy it is to voice either Hauptwerk or Midizter , it seems that the advanced version of Hauptwerk does have the ability to voice the individual samples.

With digital organs, we pull out the stops and each sounds as it should. But without the expertise of pipe organ voicing, the stops do not speak in the right ratios and so on full organ, they simply don't add up. It's partly on account of dynamic range of which the speakers are capable also.

I pulled out the Bourdon, then the Open Wood on the pedals - and there really wasn't enough difference between them. And the Choral Bass 4 did not sing through above the Violone and Octave. Then on the Great, the Posaune was not greatly above the Open Diapason and on the Swell there simply wasn't enough progression from the Violin Diapaison to the Oboe to the Trumpet and nor did the Clarion sing out boldly above. Having now given attention to all of these, the whole original instrument, without my further additions, is transformed. The next concert should be exciting!

If your in London, pop along to Brentford Music Museum, where a whole host of instruments are kept and played every day, including the stunning and unique Ex Regal Kingston Wurlitzer, residence organs, orchestrions, player pianos, pianolas....the list goes on.

Hi,
that looks like a very nice project !
as I'm not any good with hammers and saws I'm hoping at some point to get my diy electronic instrument finished. ( but that is another story )  btw The people at  EOCS  have been most helpful with this.

Electronic Organs / Re: Ahlborn 202 units
July 25, 2010, 06:05:32 PM
Hi,
I just found a company that offer a small module that can be used to track the Tuning of the Ahlborn expander modules to the surrounding temperature. ( which I guess would be useful if you are mixing Real pipes and electronics, or even might be able to be modified if you want to be able to change the tuning of the expander module remotely ! )
http://www.largonet.net/midiboutique/products/productform.php?prod_id=75000

from a recent visit to Hammerwood Park I seem to remember that the Ahlborn has a separate din socket for the connections needed.
on another subject I wonder if the user manual of the Ahlborn has any of the midi codes listed to control the other functions such as ( for example ) stop  changes, general presets and Temperament change ?
from looking at the following page ( which does give details of other systems as well ) this does seem to be possible to control the stop changes using midi commands if you know the codes.
http://tadstone.home.netcom.com/Stop_schemes.htm

of course trying to do this while you are still playing the module is probably asking for trouble....

regards Peter B

P.s. as these units seem not to be made anymore I guess their  price secondhand may be going up !

Hi,
I know that Compton stop tabs come in two main types, the non moving type and the moving type where there are two solenoids built in.
I just wondered if anyone knew if it was possible to convert the non moving type to the moving type ? of course the solenoids would have to be wound and fitted in, but I just wondered if  anyone has done this.
and as another question to the experienced Organists, are having moving stops that much of an advantage ?
