IL FAUT SAUVER l'ORGUE d'ABBEVILLE ! UN CHEF D'ŒUVRE DE L'ART FRANCAIS

Le XXème siècle n'a pas épargné Abbeville qui, lors des deux conflits mondiaux, a été durement touchée et en grande partie détruite. L'église Saint Vulfran fut l'un des édifices les plus atteints pendant les bombardements du 20 mai 1940. Ce jour-là, la collégiale vit le martyr, ses voûtes s'effondrent, ses vitraux explosent, les stalles, l'autel et ses orgues remarquables brûlent.

En conséquence, l'orgue de l'église Saint Jacques d'Abbeville, construit au début du XXème siècle par le réputé facteur d'orgues français Charles Mutin, successeur du célèbre Cavaillé-Coll, est l'un des rares instruments rescapés de cette période. C'est une œuvre d'art unique, construite par l'un des plus grands facteurs d''orgues français du début du XXème siècle. Cet instrument de musique a miraculeusement survécu à deux guerres.

Doté d'un décor somptueux (magnifique buffet néo-gothique), d'une partie musicale et technique de qualité, il est dans son domaine aussi remarquable et précieux que les œuvres majeures des peintres, sculpteurs et architectes français du début du XXème siècle.

Pour des raisons de sécurité, l'église Saint Jacques, fermée depuis plusieurs années, va être détruite.
Cette destruction a déjà commencé.

Chef d'œuvre en péril, élément majeur du patrimoine français, au même titre que les œuvres de Camille Claudel et Alfred Mannessier qui enrichissent les collections du musée d'Abbeville, cette œuvre d'art mérite que tout soit entrepris pour la sauver et la conserver, comme on le ferait dans ces circonstances pour toute oeuvre d'art.

Nous demandons à toutes les parties prenantes et les responsables de prendre la mesure de ce chef d'œuvre et de mettre en œuvre tous les moyens possibles pour sa préservation et sa transmission aux générations futures.[/font]

I am sorry to say that your post above demonstrates your inability to provide objective comment. Your views are hampered by lack of practical experience in playing and by lack of training in the practical art of organ building.


I imagine that the moderator who approved your post who I know has been trying carefully to guide you was simply exasperated at the time your posts you are occupying in your contributions to the forum.


Any organist, in contrast to an observer critic, knows that a 7 rank organ is both limited as is the repertoire you can play on it. In this context your jibe about "sufficiently imaginative hands" and emboldened is patently on the face of it absurd, and demonstrating a wholly unnecessary venomous streak wholly inappropriate to the gentlemanly world of organists and their christian context. In terms of loving your neighbour as yourself it is far from the mark.


A member of this forum has pointed you to a practical course of research in which you could do considerably more good than wasting your time on the computer making yourself feel good in criticising others with many more years of accomplishments than yourself and this includes not only players but renowned organ builders and their instruments. I am aware of one post that a moderator forwarded to me in which you rubbished an instrument and a builder which was a landmark of its time which made people _think_ and which after 30 years good service in a continuous teaching environment needs attention to its mechanics.


Perhaps it is of no coincidence that I was this morning on the point of buying

A particular member's signature has just been drawn to my attention:

Perhaps that's why areas for faith and disbelief exist in their own section of the forum. Doubting the physical existence of Christ somewhat contradicts rather a weight of documentary evidence which would simply not exist were he not to have existed . . . and perhaps the member concerned might simply contribute in this area of the forum confined to such matters rather than raising it through a signature on all posts throughout the forum . . . ?

Perhaps the signature has a poignant relevance. New beginnings are possible and the world is only as bad as ever if new beginnings aren't embraced . . . and isn't that why we celebrate the coming to earth and making of flesh of "The Idea" . . . the idea of bringing order out of disorder, the idea that new beginnings are possible, that the mind can be born again in order to make those new beginnings, the idea that Heaven can be created on Earth.

But if new beginnings aren't acknowledged, if we shut our eyes to rebirth and to "The Idea" being made flesh to teach us, then earth will remain the animal jungle that it can be without "The Idea" taking hold in flesh.

Christmas is the time when we celebrate such an idea and at a time too when the shaft of celestial light at mid-winter solstice hit the shrines of the Earth Mother in ancient stone structures and brought her to life, heralding the spring and new growth. The Greek mythology likewise has Hades capturing Persephone, daughter of Demeter, Mother Earth, and Zeus, the Sun, negotiating her return to the land of the living for two thirds of the year. Similarly,  Apollo (god of Light) abandoned his temples for half the year, leaving them to the tender mercies of Dionysus.

All of this symbolism was embodied in Christ by the early Christians, to whom it all made perfect sense with all of its festivals, but in an age bereft of its past, the timeless understanding of Christmas can be viewed as patent nonsense in itself in absence of the heritage which it subsumed . . . but in coming to terms with the ancient agricultural understanding (on which we still depend whether we like it or not), its meaning in terms of birth, rebirth, and new beginnings might be better appreciated and taken to heart . . . 

So perhaps the member's signature might be removed from elsewhere and possibly be enshrined merely here?

In the heyday of classical organ building the exterior of the instrument
was, in most cases, designed by the builder himself, whereas in the beginning
of the 19th century repeatedly architects and master builders interfered
in the styling of the organ. This might or might not have been of
profit in every case. A general accordance about the architectural style
and the ornamentation ended no later than with the Art Nouveau.
The new objectification in the design of the organ appearance around the
mid-20th century often revealed deficits in configuration and led to a blossoming
of historicism around 1980. At the beginning of the 21st century,
the design of organs is increasingly caught between client, architect and
organ builder. This area of tension often leads back to a similar decoupling

On the present situation of organ building world-wide, and specifically in

Great Britain, and an attempt at predictions for the future.


Organ building cannot remain untouched by financial crises and its consequences.
Neither financial experts nor politicians can agree on how the
financial situation will develop over the next years. So how can the poor
organ builder be expected to accurately assess the situation? He cannot,
but he can guess at how things could evolve. Earlier financial crises have
taught him that his situation pretty much corresponds to the general global
economic situation, taking effect for him with some delay. Even being
able to foresee only a little can offer a glimmer of hope. But is that enough

Tuning: Concert pitch c = 128 Hz, a′ = 429 Hz.
Unequal temperament (Johann Sonnleitner)
Three fifths (c – g, g – d, d – a) 1/6 comma narrow,
Six fifths (a – e, e – h, h – f-sharp and e-flat – b-flat, b-flat – f, f – c)
1/12 comma narrow,
Three pure fifths (f-sharp – c-sharp, d-flat – a-flat, a-flat – e-flat).
From each of the 12 notes one tunes an «Alphorn-Fa» 11/8, giving a
nearly perfect 24-note cycle of harmonic fourths.
The pipes are arranged in third-seventh divisions to benefit the natural
sevenths 7/4 that are somewhat disadvantaged because of the quartertone
tuning.


* In «extended tonality» the major and minor scales after slight adjustments
in accordance with the proportions of the harmonic series from
the eighth to the 14th harmonic (in the major mode) and their inversion
(for the minor mode). Slightly tempering the exact mathematic relationships
makes enharmonic transformations possible.
