Reed organs and harmoniums / Reed Organ Weekend
March 10, 2016, 09:40:52 AM
Harmonium UK 2016
September 10th & 11th provide an opportunity for musicians & enthusiasts to explore the wonderful world of the Harmonium.  The event, under the auspices of the Reed Organ Society will include concerts, demonstrations, and exhibition of historic material and artefacts, talks, and more.
The venue for the events is Hammerwood Park, a stately home in the idyllic Sussex countryside near East Grinstead in East Sussex.  Hammerwood Park was built in 1792 by Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764 - 1820), architect of the White House and US Capitol Building in Washington D.C., and many others.  Hammerwood is close to Gatwick Airport and the Channel Ports and Channel Tunnel (and there is a heliport close by!).  Closest railway station is East Grinstead.  There are many hotels and B&B options within easy reach.
The event runs from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon.  Day visitors are welcome.  Advance booking is essential for the conference, but, space allowing, the concerts on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon will be open to the public.

Hi

The church cannot & must not lay aside the basic truths of the gospel message.  Compromise with the secular or with other religions is a dangerous path - just read your Old Testament!

David

I pray that God will reveal to you the basic truth & simplicity of the real gospel message - "believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved".  It really is that simple - and that profound.

Your comments about choirs & organs are a red herring - they are not essential to the Christian faith - and indeed, certainly in the UK, most churches didn;t have organs until well into the 1800's.

Yes - religions can and should work together to try & bring about peace and the releif of suffering and so on - but that in no way is the same thing as saying all religions are equally valide - they are not.  "Jesus said:- I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except by me".  That's pretty conclusive - unless you say that Jesus isn't the Son of God - and in that case, you are not a Christian (by  the simple definition of the word).

Hi

I'm pretty much in agreement with Paul.  I've kept out of this discussion in the main, because I really don;t want to spend time researching ancient writings - I've got more interesting things to do.  However, your post yesterday, David, is virtually supporting syncretism - a heresey that was problematic for the Jews in the Old Testament, and the Early Church.

As to the resurrection and you're throwing doubt on the reality of it, words fail me.  Paul's words to the Corinthian church are very relevant here:-

"12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith." (1 Corinthians 15:12f)

It looks to me as if you are over-intelluctalising something that in essence is simple, yet profound.  "Christ died for ou sins".

Christianity is not a religion, in the sense of other faith systems, it's a relationship with the Creator Himself, through faith and BELIEF.  It seems to me that the church needs to stop looking inwards, and get back to the core business of "making disciples" as Jesus command us - but that's really another discussion.

The bottom line is "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)

Hi

The Methodist Church have organ advisors - I think you should be able to make comtact via the Methodist Music web site (or whatever the name of the organisation is).  Come back to me (e-mail prefered as I can then just forward it to my contact) if you can't find the relevant info, as I know one of their advisors who is located up North.  They're usually pretty good about trying to rehouse redundant organs.  Not totally sure about the URC situation, but again I may be able to find out.

James   PeterSorry David - the Devil/Satan or whatever (s)he's called is very real.

Jesus has a great deal to say about him in the gospels, as does the rest of the Bible, which is, let's not forget, the Word of God.

To say that the Devil does not exist means that he has won a victory and encourages us to lower our guard.  He is the source & origin of evil - and I think you'll agree that evil is all too real!

May I suggest you read (re-read?) C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters".

Hi

I do wonder at the validity of such mathematical exeercises, considering that the original inspired text wwas, presumably, written in Hebrew.  I wonder how that fits the theory?

Hi

In the absence of replies to my questions to the person who wanted this post removed, I've closed the moderation topic.

Although sad to see an instrument that is currently in playable order and used regularly being "mothballed", at least work has been done to protect the pipework from dust/debris during the building renovation, and it's also very good to note that it will remain in situ, and not be broken up, scrapped, or moved elsewhere, so there is hope for a future re-instatement.

Hi

I'd hoped to get there this year, but circumstances have prevented it.  Hopefully next year.  We'll probably need to find accomodation in the area & spread things over a couple of days though - my mobility issues aren't getting any bettert.

Hi

Wish I could be there, but playing for 2 carol services on that day!  Sundays are difficult for those of us who have church responsibilities!

Organ Music and Repertoire / Re: Capella and Sibelius
November 06, 2015, 09:31:45 AM
Hi

Used Muse Score under Windows 10 for first time other than a quick test yesterday.  The only issue I had was the MIDI keyboard input disappearing a couple of times after I'd left the computer and come back a little later to continue.  requires closing & restarting Muse Score to continue.

FWIW, I'm preparing Carol arrangements for our musicians at church - we all play recorder and can muster everything from Garklein to Bass, plus one plays Flute & 2 Clarinets.  Great fun.

Thanks David

I was given the score of the Shearing variations by a good friend - they are quite fun.  I've had a copy of the Nares for some time - can't remember where I got it from (it's the Oxford facsimilie edition), but that's the first time I used it.  The choice of the Tomlinson was simply that I wanted something short & quiet and fairly easy to play and that fitted the bill.  I didn't know anything about him until I was researching for the programme notes.

Thanks again

From our local DJ / Re: ...What a pleasant surprise...

Hi

There are literally dozens of potential venues used for orchestral recording - you'd need to track down the record number & company and then there might be a chance of finding what location was used.

Many classical recordings are made in venues (Town Halls & the like) that are not on the min concert circuit, but that have good acoustics and not too much ambient noise.
