FOR SALE and WANTED / Re: bits and bobs.

Tony,
Would you be bothered if I converted it to straight/ concave? The more I think about this pedal board the more I think it might be a good solution.

Matt.

FOR SALE and WANTED / bits and bobs.
July 02, 2014, 07:31:16 PM
I've started building a midi console, and was wondering if anyone had any of the following lying around.
Music desk hooks, thumb pistons, bench and a r/c pedal board.
I might think of other bits as I go along, but those seem to be the ones i'm struggling with.

Matt.

Organs wanted / Digital wanted for home practice
December 10, 2013, 11:36:46 AM
Hi.

Sorry to have been away from the forum for so long, life has been hectic this year. Suffice to say that I now find myself living on my own in what was previously our family home. Whilst I am going to continue to build the house pipe organ, I would also like something to 'plug in and play', so if anyone knows of a cheap electronic that's up for grabs could you let me know please.

Regards,
Matt.

Restoring pipe organs / Re: "Father" Willis Organ

Hi

Could you post a link to the NPOR listing, it might help to know where you are and the spec of the organ.

House Organs / Re: House organ started!

What about combining 1 1/3 and 1 as one compound stop? Then the other four would be the Clarabella 8, Open Flute 4, Stopped Flute 4, Flautina 2'.
This actually saves room as there will be no need for an off note chest for the bottom octave of the OF, as Terz says I would borrow the pipes from the SF.

House Organs / Re: House organ started!

Hi

I hadn't thought about a 1'.  I must admit that having tried the combination of 8', 4' 2 2/3' and 2' on the Allen I play I was having doubts about the Nasat, which was part of the reason for the post.  It is actually quite hard to put together a complete organ when limited to 4 or 5 ranks (+pedal).

Hi

I'm still fine tuning the spec of my organ.  So far it's Clarabella 8', Open Flute 4', Nasat 2 2/3' and Flautina 2', with a small scaled Bourdon 16' on the pedals.  I have room for one more small stop, and was thinking of including a Larigot, but am unsure of whether it would add to the ensemble or simply be there because it can be. All stops are of wood, and I thought the small mutation would add brightness, but I don't want it to screech!

Organ building and maintenance / Re: Leather!!
May 21, 2013, 08:36:18 PM
Hi

I'll have to invest in a glue pot then. I remember reading years ago that hot glue makes the leather less brittle because of the way it sets (it freezes in the pores, hence does not soak in so much). I didn't think that would be quite as big a problem for the pallets as for the reservoir, but hadn't thought of the problem of re-leathering.  To be honest I'm not looking forward to that stage now, by all accounts animal glue is rather pungent!

Matt.

Organ building and maintenance / Leather!!
May 19, 2013, 04:19:42 PM
Hi

I'm getting on with the house organ, and the next big challenge is the windchest.  Has anyone any idea as to what kind of leather organ builders are using for the pallets these days? Is it still the white sheepskin or is there a modern substitute? And where does one go about getting the correct grade?  I also need to know what kind of glue to use, is it still the traditional hide glue or would something like Evostick be suitable?

Thanks
Matt.

I can't believe that despite growing up within 5 miles of this wonderful little instrument, my father having preached many times in the chapel, and having a good 1/4 of my ancestors in the churchyard, this is the first time I've heard it!!

And I must confess a certain fondness for Laycock (& Bannister) 's organs; most of the organs I played on in my youth were L&B or Binns.

House Organs / House organ started!
March 30, 2013, 03:08:46 PM
Hi.
As I mentioned in a previous thread, I have finally started building my house organ. I've set up an account on twitter to record progress @The_Organ_Loft if anyone is interested in following. So far I've only made a dozen or so pipes for the 4' rank, but am making steady progress and am pleased with the results so far.

Matt.

Hi Tony,

How big is the reservoir? I haven't really given much serious thought to that part of the organ, except that I want the two manual divisions to be blown independently so I can experiment with different tremulant designs.  I know a lot of new instruments have some sort of pressure regulator on the windchest, with the blowers feeding directly to them. I also suspect that an organ fed by an electric blower would not need anything like as big a reservoir as one which is hand blown.
I can see more research coming on...

Matt

Hi

Thanks for your replies.

Tony: The grand plan is to have two small manual divisions so although the 54 note manual would save making about half a dozen tiny pipes I think it might make problems finding another one to go with it (I would be interested to know where it came from though).

Victor: These sound interesting, but I'm quite some distance from Eastbourne (High Peak in Derbyshire), so would have to give some thought as to the logistics.

I only recently re-kindled my interest in Organ playing, so unfortunately don't have a lot of local organ builder contacts (since  the only organ I play often is an Allen). Will have to have a look around.

Matt.

Hi

I've finally started work on my house organ. Most of the parts I'll be making myself, but I cannot imagine the work involved in making the keyboards and pedalboard (although I do have some rough drawings done!). If anyone has any kicking around and wants to see them used please get in touch.

Matt.

Hi

I only hope that the reserve hasn't been set to match an offer from the scrap men. The scrap value of the pipes and lead conveyancing is often more than the value of the organ complete. Sad times.

Matt.

Peter.
Is there anything worth salvaging?  I'm thinking of building a small house organ and might be able to rescue bits and bobs. I thought perhaps the pipework in the swell box might have been saved from to much harm.  I'm not far away from Leek, just the other side of Buxton.

One thing that worries me about churches 'mothballing' their pipe organs: in the last 20 or so years electronic organs (I hear what you say about the term toaster, although I shall continue to use it for more vintage examples) have improved dramatically. If this continues through the next generation then our job of saving what pipe organs remain will be so much harder. Large Churches and Cathedrals apart I can see very few lasting my lifetime.

Although not if I have anything to do with it!!

Matt.

Peter.

Could you give a bit more info on the state of the organ please. Is there much damage to the pipework?
And what is your timescale?

Matt.

Hi

What about the Margate II + P which is also being discussed on here (in another thread) at the moment?
