The pipe organ that sits unused in the northeast corner of the auditorium of the Ainad Shriners Temple in East St. Louis could bellow music loud enough to make the building shake -- if it had power.

But it doesn't, so the group is considering selling it to someone who can give it a nice home. The pipe organ was installed when the temple at 609 St. Louis Ave., was built during 1922-23 but it hasn't been played since 2003, said Shriners Administrator Mark Maxwell.

No one had paid much attention to the organ for quite a while. When the installation of a new potentate was planned in January and it was suggested they use the organ, they discovered it didn't work.

The Shriners have not advertised the organ other than putting a notice in the monthly bulletin and talking to a few organ enthusiasts about it.

One technician who looked at the organ suggested that if it wasn't going to be used that the group might want to sell the ranks or pipes.

"We want to keep it intact," Maxwell said. "We'd love to find a good home for it."
