Only a couple of days ago I learned of a Model Y Orchestrelle in Golders Green, fully restored, 10 full ranks plus bass, honey oak casework, with matching stool and a blower in a matching cabinet, which was taken into the garden, chopped up and burned. This was within the last fortnight; The owner, a wealthy man, had become tired of it.
A report has been received asking for this topic to be removed.
It is a matter of interest relating to an instrument worthy of preservation and about which the future appears to hold question marks and has spawned a balanced discussion.
You deserve a gold medal for the tireless addition of news reports to the forum and as a result you've succeeded in saving an organ!
Hope it goes well on ebay. If you happen to be able to track down the listing, through this forum perhaps we might achieve a wider arena for its sale.
Perhaps this is not only about organs but also raising consciousness about people's environment - what they don't value but which might be useful or enjoyable to someone else, about thinking about others and thinking of how they can allocate resources at their disposal, how they can be useful to others. This is life! Organs are often housed in buildings dedicated to the "God of Life" . . . and in this way, organs can lead to more fruitful life. . .

IL FAUT SAUVER l’ORGUE d’ABBEVILLE ! UN CHEF D’ŒUVRE DE L’ART FRANCAIS
Le XXème siècle n’a pas épargné Abbeville qui, lors des deux conflits mondiaux, a été durement touchée et en grande partie détruite. L’église Saint Vulfran fut l’un des édifices les plus atteints pendant les bombardements du 20 mai 1940. Ce jour-là, la collégiale vit le martyr, ses voûtes s’effondrent, ses vitraux explosent, les stalles, l’autel et ses orgues remarquables brûlent.
En conséquence, l’orgue de l’église Saint Jacques d’Abbeville, construit au début du XXème siècle par le réputé facteur d’orgues français Charles Mutin, successeur du célèbre Cavaillé-Coll, est l’un des rares instruments rescapés de cette période. C’est une œuvre d’art unique, construite par l’un des plus grands facteurs d’’orgues français du début du XXème siècle. Cet instrument de musique a miraculeusement survécu à deux guerres.
Doté d’un décor somptueux (magnifique buffet néo-gothique), d’une partie musicale et technique de qualité, il est dans son domaine aussi remarquable et précieux que les œuvres majeures des peintres, sculpteurs et architectes français du début du XXème siècle.
Pour des raisons de sécurité, l’église Saint Jacques, fermée depuis plusieurs années, va être détruite. Cette destruction a déjà commencé.
Chef d’œuvre en péril, élément majeur du patrimoine français, au même titre que les œuvres de Camille Claudel et Alfred Mannessier qui enrichissent les collections du musée d’Abbeville, cette œuvre d’art mérite que tout soit entrepris pour la sauver et la conserver, comme on le ferait dans ces circonstances pour toute oeuvre d’art.
Nous demandons à toutes les parties prenantes et les responsables de prendre la mesure de ce chef d’œuvre et de mettre en œuvre tous les moyens possibles pour sa préservation et sa transmission aux générations futures.[/font]

I also realised today why Makins wouldnt disclose to me the info - everytime I go somewhere and tell the church how rare and wonderful their electrone is, im potentially losing them a sale!

I am sorry to say that your post above demonstrates your inability to provide objective comment. Your views are hampered by lack of practical experience in playing and by lack of training in the practical art of organ building.
I imagine that the moderator who approved your post who I know has been trying carefully to guide you was simply exasperated at the time your posts you are occupying in your contributions to the forum.
Any organist, in contrast to an observer critic, knows that a 7 rank organ is both limited as is the repertoire you can play on it. In this context your jibe about "sufficiently imaginative hands" and emboldened is patently on the face of it absurd, and demonstrating a wholly unnecessary venomous streak wholly inappropriate to the gentlemanly world of organists and their christian context. In terms of loving your neighbour as yourself it is far from the mark.
A member of this forum has pointed you to a practical course of research in which you could do considerably more good than wasting your time on the computer making yourself feel good in criticising others with many more years of accomplishments than yourself and this includes not only players but renowned organ builders and their instruments. I am aware of one post that a moderator forwarded to me in which you rubbished an instrument and a builder which was a landmark of its time which made people _think_ and which after 30 years good service in a continuous teaching environment needs attention to its mechanics.

Substitute here the concept of "wealth" for "nice person" - "one with whom others can work" - the three concepts are often synonymous.

you only need to talk to a city banker (and I've known a few) to realise what a cavalier attitude they take. If we removed or heavily reduced taxation, there would be no money to run our schools, libraries, public parks, civic concert halls(!), National Health Service (and let's not argue about that, saying the NHS shouldn't exist as some do ought to remove your right to a British passport).
This thread is not a soapbox upon which to spout about what is wrong, but to put oneself in the position of the responsibility of the possession of a tidy sum with which one can do quite a lot but not so much as to be able to do much more than . . . inspire.
By doing this, then others might contemplate doing likewise with their resources and those with even more resources can apply those to the bigger picture . . .
So can you do it? This is a mental exercise more widely appropriate to more than organists, but all organists usually have an organ to include in such ideas . . .
In view of recent vacillations reported in the press about taxation, this thread really might be worth pursuing and championing. If our culture was to see how personal wealth could be used to greater public benefit resulting not from coercion but from enthusiasm to achieve greater good, then taxation and the need for it would be significantly unnecessary. Do we really have to abrogate our responsibilities of christian spending to big government to do it for us?
It's great to see more members joining the forum: can we keep ideas here flowing? Proposals here to curate a large sum of money are allowed to include an organ . . . !
