p.s. in the past when central heating wasn't common, how did Harpsichords not break strings and stay in tune?

I suspect they didn't stay in tune.  I don't know about breaking strings, but I'll bet the harpsichordists had to re-tune, at least partially, before every use.

I thought it was excellent.  The 'sticky out bits' were very impressive.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some potential purchasers ask whether the 'model' is included in the price.

Thank you gentlemen.  So, a good idea if well installed and adjusted.

Please forgive me, but are there any examples of 'double touch pistons'?  By that, I mean pistons in manual key slips that, pressed to the first detent, bring on a combination for that manual as normal and, if pressed beyond the first detent, bring on a suitable pedal combination as well.  The same could apply to pedal toe pistons, of course.

Unless I'm mistaken, such a system could obviate the need for a 'great and pedal combinations coupled' stop and could provide a similar facility for other manuals too.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the Nave organ would be installed before the Quire organ is reconstructed. But again, I could be wrong. What if they want to base the Nave organ on the reconstructed Quire organ?

I should have thought that the opposite would be the case. I still cannot imagine where a Nave organ would be placed - unless Klais produce another of their 'hanging' instruments (c.f. Cologne Cathedral Nave organ).

Or, horror of horrors, an electronic substitute with inconspicuous speakers!   ::)

(It has happened before.)

I tried that.  I gave her the ironing board cover early...

...and now she won't speak to me.  :'(

I'll just have to wait, I suppose.

Mind you, my wife won't be getting her new ironing board cover until Christmas Day.

I received mine yesterday.  Well, sort of.
It's my Christmas present and 'er indoors won't let me have it before the 25th.

Well if anyone wants a key-holder/trainee tuner in the south Manchester/north-east Cheshire area, I'd be interested!

Like it.  Thank you.

You're very welcome, Paul, although I'm afraid I cannot claim to be a musician!  Just a lifelong interest in the organ and its design.

I particularly like this one what you wrote earlier:

Oh, we weren't arguing.  Just a little light-hearted banter.

Some of my best friends are Lankies.  :)

I hesitate to reply to this, as it must be becoming apparent to our hosts that it is going rather off-topic.  However, I'd just like to say that I have a great deal of respect for Lankies.  Of all the English counties they are, without doubt, the second best.

I was thinking in the longer term - before everybody began importing foreigners.  ::)

Have a look in the Guinness Book of World Records and see who has won the most county championships since they started!   ;D

Edit: Well done for winning one Lankies!

You're all Lankies!

Yorkshire born, Yorkshire bred. Strong in the arm........... ;)

Best wishes,
Paul.

Oh, you're only jealous!

Want to talk about cricket?  ;D

No doubt the anonymous 'benefactor' believes he has done them a great favour!

Thank you kind sir!

By the way, I see you are a Manc. I live in St Helens, not too far (but far enough ;)) from Scouseland. It's a strange place, St Helens. Everyone east of the M6 thinks we're Scousers, and Scousers think we're Wiganers (the ultimate insult!)

Best wishes,
Paul.

You're all Lankies!

Miscellaneous & Suggestions / Re: Town hall organs

Hi

Very good questions.  I suspect that very few are really used regularly - the notable exceptions being Birmingham, Leeds, St George's Hall, Liverpool & West Bromwich - and probably a couple of others.  (These are ones I've seen recent mention of).

Not a Town Hall organ, but the closest we used to have in Bradford is St George's Hall - I gather the organ is long derelict and hasn#t been used for many years - and there's no hope, even before the current crisis, of a restoration and use.

Every Blessing

Tony

Yes, a crying shame.  The last time I heard it was at my school speech day, and that was a lifetime ago.  I'm afraid Bradford Council is not terribly forward-looking, at least with regard to organs.
