From our local DJ / Re: Recording studio specialising in pipe organs!

I would recommend the Zoom h4n as a digital recorder that can handle organ music well.

Review here http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun09/articles/zoomh4n.htm.

It is small enough to carry to a church in a pocket, has reasonable stereo microphones built in and can record in quality which transfers well to CD

In the 1970s I worked in a music shop and I had a loudspeaker made of a Trombone bell fitted to a Fane Pressure driver. I had a Crumar Multiman which emulated piano strings and brass. I had a switch which used the "Trombone speaker" for the synthesized brass sounds and the effect had one man rushing to see the "trumpeter"

Crumar Multiman is here http://www.vintagesynth.com/misc/crumar_orch.php

Restoring pipe organs / Re: Organ restoration projects making the news
« on: December 06, 2012, 10:29:39 PM »
At one Parish Church where I played, the organ was in a bad way - Tuning and wood pipes splitting due to a hot air heating system above the organ. I mentioned that it should be overhauled. One choir member was aghast saying the organ had only just been overhauled. When pressed she said it was ONLY 25 years ago!

This is a fascinating article about Cameron Carpenter and the future of the organ. Very interesting if controversial.

Latest news from Boardwalkpipes.com
OCTOBER 31, 2012
The latest news is that it is not currently possible to get into Atlantic City. Therefore, an assessment of the Hall and the organs cannot take place. Organ Curator Carl Loeser reports: "I just spoke to one of our engineers. They have a skeleton crew at the building. At first glance, it looks like Boardwalk Hall survived. There apparently was/is a few inches of water on the garage level, that should not have caused any problems to our equipment. Thankfully, we already had moved the 125HP blower up out of the pit [below the garage]. No roof damage, as far as I have been told. So, until we can make a closer examination, that is all I can report. I do not know whether I will be able to get into Atlantic City this week. They still have things closed down pretty tight. Plus, you can't drink the water." Further updates will be posted here as-and-when they are available.  :)

It is interesting to use digital electronic organs with various temperaments available. See if your congregation can hear any difference! :D

Organs wanted / Re: 2 manual wanted for school chapel.
« on: October 05, 2012, 07:39:49 PM »
Re longevity of Electronic Organs. On I installed in a Masonic Chapel in 1980 is still working. A 4-manual Copeman Hart installed in 1972 had the electronics  removed and a digital system installed in the original console. If you go down the electronic route please get as many channels as you can.

They were quite advanced in their day, The organ in the Royal military Academy at Sandhirst, although later updated by Rushworth and Dreaper is a good example of their work.
