Subject: pipe organ for sale

Colleagues:

Bridgwater College has a pipe organ for sale. It is a Rushworth & Dreaper extension instrument with 2 manuals and 30 note pedal-board. There are 5/6 stops on each manual, derived from 2 ranks of good quality spotted metal pipework, apart from the largest basses, which are stopped zinc. The "case" is two opposing large triangles of pipework. The largest pedal pipes are in a separate, taller case at the back. The pipes are behind plexiglass swell shutters which currently do not function!
The organ has been assessed by Andrew Fearn, of T.W. Fearn, as broadly very effective. That said, it needs a complete overhaul, and were it to be purchased and moved, the opportunity should be taken to rebuild it and to renew action mechanism where necessary. The cost of this work he estimates as £5,000 - £7,000. As for the price of the organ, the college has been advised that it will not fetch more than a few hundred. For under £8,000, therefore, a two-manual and pedal pipe organ could be available. The large pedal pipes in their separate box could be detached and placed away from the rest of the instrument, since they currently make it taller than it need be. It would then, I think, fit under a ceiling height of about 10 feet.

I am circulating you all, since it is possible, in your peregrinations among local churches, that you may hear of a church looking to replace a decrepit pipe organ, or even looking to replace a digital instrument. A bequest may have been left by a local worthy towards music in the parish. Alternatively, you may know of an individual living in a palatial home, which could accommodate such an organ. You may even be such a person yourself! If you have any thoughts about this, or would like to try it yourself, get in touch, and I'll try to arrange a visit.

Best wishes,

John

Miscellaneous & Suggestions / Re: Organist Murdered

This awful news has been on the news this afternoon and is also being discussed on Facebook and on the Mander Organs forum.  A terrible thing to happen and may I ask that we pray for the Priest and People of St Saviour's at this traumatic time.  May he Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory.

Miscellaneous & Suggestions / Re: Seasons Greetings

May I join in with this thread and add my very best wishes for Christmass and the New Year to all forum members.  I am playing tonight for Midnight Mass and over Christmass on a very pleasant organ in St John the Evangelist, Bovey Tracey and am very conscious tonight of the very great privilege and responsibility which we share, not only tonight, but throughout the year.

House Organs / Re: NPOR

It seems a pity that such a valuable database is so poorly resourced.  Might there be scope for designing a proforma for data entry, completed by the user, which could be approved and added to the database by the administrators without the need for re-typing the data?

House Organs / NPOR
December 10, 2012, 12:21:15 PM
I sent the details of my house organ to NPOR a few weeks ago.  Had an email back the same day as they couldn't read my Mac file.  I changed it, and they confirmed that they could now read it.  Just wondering how long it might be before it appears on the database?

Organs in danger / Flood damage
November 26, 2012, 09:39:08 PM
Many areas around here (in Somerset) have suffered severe flooding over the past few days.  Whilst, obviously, people are concerned firstly with saving lives and preserving property, does anyone know whether any organs have been damaged?

I was having lunch today with the friend who came with me to Chagford when I looked at this organ a year or so ago.  We were wondering how Patrick was getting on with the work.  Any chance of an update?

Looking at the church website, whilst they have a choir, the traditional service has been pushed to 8.45am to allow for a happy-clappy gathering at prime time.  They probably want the space taken by the organ for a drum kit  :'(

Link now sorted.  I agree, to replace a fine organ like this with a toaster is a travesty.

Just spotted this on the ABRSM forum.  A chance to acquire a very good organ for practice or church use.  O that I had the space?

Just appeared on Ebay:

To be replaced by a toaster - what are the DAC thinking about to give a faculty for this?
